Mega Man X DiVE, known as Rockman X DiVE (ロックマンX DiVE Rokkuman Ekkusu Daivu) in Taiwan and Japan, is an action-platforming video game in the Mega Man X series developed by Capcom Taiwan for iOS, Android, and Steam. The game stars the Player themself as they use Hunter Programs to help the newcomers RiCO and ViA fight glitches in a vast database of Mega Man X data, known as the Deep Log.

Mega Man X DiVE was first accessible in a closed beta test from September 12-16, 2019. It was fully released in non-Japan Asian countries (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Cambodia) for iOS and Android on March 24, 2020.[2] A Japanese version of the game was launched on October 26, 2020 with a new server, and published by Capcom Mobile JP.[3]

Early access for the global version, published by NebulaJoy, was released on June 30, 2021 in the United States and United Kingdom.[4] The full global version was released in the US, UK, Canada, and Ireland on August 16, 2021,[5] and in Europe and Latin America on November 2021.[6] Finally, the game was released on Steam in Asian countries on September 15, 2021, and in global countries on January 20, 2022.[7][8][9]

The two Asian versions of Mega Man X DiVE ended their online services on September 27, 2023. An official offline version titled Mega Man X DiVE Offline was released on September 1 the same year. The global online version is still active as of November 2023.

Story

Mega Man X DiVE is a metanarrative, as the Player themselves are an acknowledged participant in the story. The game is set in a cyberspace database called the Deep Log, which contains data from all games in the Mega Man X series, along with the experiences of players all around the world. After decades of this database being managed by a mysterious administrator, they disappeared, letting corruption and other errors thrive in the form of Maverick Data.

The game begins with RiCO, the latest administrator of the Deep Log, welcoming the Player and enlisting their help in clearing up the glitches plaguing the database. The Player uses Hunter Programs to clear out Maverick Data, discovering a host of new glitched entities as well. Some are friendly rivals, such as ViA and iCO, while others are tragic foes, such as the three siblings Droitclair, Angepitoyeir, and Eratoeir. There is also data from other Capcom properties mixed into the Deep Log, such as the other Mega Man series, Street Fighter, Monster Hunter, and Devil May Cry.

Characters

Some of the characters in Mega Man X DiVE.

The game features a wide array of heroes and villains from the X series as well several other characters from across the franchise. At launch, longtime playable characters X, Zero, and Axl from the mainline games are joined by Alia and Pallette, previously playable in Mega Man X8, Vile, previously playable in Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, and Cinnamon, Steel Massimo, Marino and Ferham from Mega Man X: Command Mission; Cinnamon, Massimo, and Marino debuting in their first side-scrolling game and Ferham making her first playable appearance. Later, additional characters were included, such as Layer, Sigma, and Iris. Characters also have variations and skins available, such as X using different armors.

The game also included characters from other series: The original Mega Man series characters Mega Man, Proto Man, Roll, and Super Mega Man, the Mega Man Zero characters Zero (Z), Leviathan, Ciel, Copy X, and Omega, the Mega Man ZX characters Aile and Pandora, the Mega Man Legends characters Mega Man Volnutt and Tron Bonne, and the Mega Man Battle Network characters MegaMan.EXE, ProtoMan.EXE, and Bass.EXE

Supporting characters include the Player, RiCO, ViA, and Eddie.

Gameplay

DiVE is a 2D action-platformer made with a modified engine from Mega Man Maverick Hunter X. While the gameplay is largely similar to that of a typical side-scrolling Mega Man game, certain aspects are changed in that the player can attack enemies from all angles with an optional automatic aim system (similar to that of Mega Man X7), enemies don't drop any recovery items, and rather than a character using their own primary weapons along with Maverick/Robot Master Special Weapons, one has a primary weapon and a secondary weapon, ranging from busters, close combat weapons, rifles, mortars, and sprayers. A single-stage from a mainline game is split up into five different levels with a boss at the end of each of them, i.e., the Highway Stage from Mega Man X is split up into five chapters. Each level completion will reward players' stars, which have special requirements to achieve. Additional rewards can be earned when the player managed to get a specific number of stars on each stage.

Trivia

  • DiVE’s story of the player going into a digital world as avatars of characters from the series to combat a threat that uses settings and enemies from older games is similar to Mega Man Xtreme’s story, where X sends an avatar of himself into the Mother Computer’s network to stop an unknown enemy from resurrecting old Mavericks.
  • So far Mega Man X DiVE is the franchise's game with the most "Meta" storyline. The game itself recognizes Mega Man as a game franchise, and RiCO and ViA often talks directly to the player, breaking the fourth wall.
  • Although considered part of the Mega Man X/Rockman X series, Mega Man X DiVE incorporates elements from other series as well.
    • Examples include Area A from Mega Man ZX and the Floating Ruins from Mega Man ZX Advent.
    • Additionally, before the game's release, it was possible to spot a screenshot of Impact Man's stage from Mega Man 11 during RiCO's introductory trailer.[10]. The player can also see this screenshot while booting up the game for the first time. As of May 21, Classic Mega Man, Proto Man, and Roll are added to the game as well.
  • Iris and Ciel are the only playable characters introduced in Mega Man X DiVE thus far who do not use recycled audio.
    • Although Iris was implemented as a playable character on June 11th 2020, the plan to record new dialogue for her was delayed by complications related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, Yūko Mizutani, Iris's original voice actress, passed away on May 17th 2016, necessitating a recast. The update notes that recorded dialogue for Iris wil be implemented at a later date. [11] Ciel also lacks a voice as of being implemented as a playable character on August 26th 2020, with her voice recordings scheduled to be implemented at a later date.
      • The new voice actress for Iris' voice in Mega Man X DiVE is from Aya Endō, being added to the game on July 9, 2020.
  • Among the action/platform genre titles in the Mega Man franchise, Mega Man X DiVE offers the largest roster of playable characters. Prior to this game, Mega Man Powered Up had the largest roster, with 11 playable characters.
  • Certain English words are censored in the chat due to their offensive nature. The system will also censor some parts of the words which also results in Massimo's name being censored.
  • X DiVE is the first game to have several characters, such as Ferham, Iris, and Pandora, as playable characters.
    • This is also the first time Cinnamon, Massimo and Marino are playable in a 2D action-platform game.
  • This is the first Mega Man X game to include characters from the classic series outside of Dr. Light and Dr. Wily.
  • In this game, "DiVE" is written as "ダイヴ" (Daivu) in Japanese. Incidentally, a word "dive" is generally written as "ダイブ" (daibu).
  • The names of RiCO and ViA use the same lowercase "i" as DiVE.
